What a Bloody Mess

Be Handy
blood on carpet

You’re half way through your dinner prep and you’ve just started cutting up your vegetables. As you go to cut a carrot, it slips underneath your knife and unfortunately your knife gets your thumb instead! OUCH! You have to quickly run to the bathroom to grab a plaster but on the way you drip blood on the carpet.

Unfortunately accidents happen which can involve a bloody mess on the carpet.

Make sure everyone is safe, grab a paper towel or damp cloth and blot up as much of the stain as possible. DO NOT RUB!

THEN…

For Synthetic Carpet (Rhino, Polyester, Nylon)

  1.  Mix 1/4 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap with one cup warm water.
  2. Apply the cleaning solution to the stain area. Work from the outside of the stain toward the centre.
  3.  Allow the cleaning solution to remain on the spill for at least five minutes.
  4.  Blot with a clean white cloth until no more stain transfers to the cloth. Do not rub the stain area or you might damage the carpet fibres.
  5. Rinse with cold water. Be sure all cleaning solution is removed from carpet.
  6.  If you can still see the stain, repeat the process until either the stain is removed or the stain no longer transfers to the cloth.
  7. When the carpet is dry, vacuum to restore the texture.

For Wool

  1.  Mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent with two cups of cold water. If the stain has dried, brush it well to remove the surface deposit.
  2.  Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the detergent solution.
  3.  Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  4.  Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the stain disappears or is no longer absorbed into the cloth.
  5.  If the stain remains, mix one tablespoon of ammonia (Caution: Never mix chlorine bleach and ammonia – the resulting fumes are hazardous) with 1/2 cup of warm water.
  6.  Sponge the stain with the ammonia solution.
  7.  Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  8. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.

The rule of thumb with stains is if you can eat or drink it, you should be able to get it out of the carpet.
We recommend getting a full professional carpet clean every 12 to 18 months.
